This area was one of my greater concerns. The centerboard housing was poorly repaired some time ago. Someone had built some fins on either side of the ctrboard that were rotting and falling apart.

Some attempt had been made to paint/seal the wood panels but they were weak and easily removed with a hammer. I cleaned up the rough edges with a right angle grinder. The original fiberglass was tough as nails, so I basically removed the retrofit dorsal fins and cleaned it up. I'm not positive, but I think this is originally how the boat was made. I have seen other pictures of similar size boats that leave the top of the ctrboard exposed.

Another area of concern was some braces that had rotted out under the gunwhales. I could tell there was some kind of brace there, it had rotted away too. The gunwhales were quite flexible and I don't know as I would want to plant my rear on the side of the boat with a strong wind to my back. They needed more support.

Using a right angle grinder I cleaned the surfaces of loose fglass and paint. I used 3/4" plywood and more epoxy to bond a brace on each side of the boat. Not shown in these photos, I slathered more epoxy over the wood to seal it from the elements. It will eventually get painted with the hull paint, not a perfect match but better than 'pink'.
