First Sail

1989-1996 I used Unigraphics at Lovejoy Tool in Sprinfield, VT to design cutting tools for the machining industry. I also was self taught in GRIP (Graphics Interface PRogramming). I developed some macros that helped the designers build cutting tools faster and with more consistancy. During that time, the CAD industry went through a major shift from 2D/3D wire frame and surfacing to a historical, feature based, parametric, solid modeler. Unigraphics and Pro-Engineer were the two products I saw the most in industry. They were both very expensive.

1997 - Along comes SolidWorks. An excellent product for the money. Still is today. SolidWorks was out earlier, but I had not seen it yet. I had seen other low & mid range packages like MicroStation, AutoCAD, Cadkey, etc. SolidWorks seemed to offer 90% of the big boy capabilities for a fraction of the cost. I was sold.

With some programming background in Visual Basic, I immediately took to SolidWorks API. I started contracting and writing some articles about SolidWorks. I became a SolidWorks research partner and started this web site. The custom programming jobs pay better, but there is more work available in design.

I have worked for several companies as a design engineer. All of my patents are through those companies. Some of my own contract work is shown below.

Stainless steel Bill Changer for EWASH, LLC. It utilizes redundant 'smart card' dispensers and is designed for servicability and to foil vandals.
J.R. Liggett Patented Soap Box. 2 piece plastic injection molded.
Athletic Head Band that uses proprietary material. This work was utilized in a patent application.
Point Of Sale printer. This device is designed to recieve a palm pilot with a bar code reader. Then it can generate a receipt using a thermal print head. The batteries are hidden in a door under the Palm Pilot. It is targeted at 'Mary Kay' and sidewalk vendors. Last I knew, these were for sale at Staples.
Industrial Trash Compactor. This model was made as promotional material only. The model was animated with a 'fly-by' to show all sides and the moving parts. The animation was also entered in the SolidWorks Animator contest and took First Place!
